Random Rome

It was a beautiful, sunny autumn day outside today so I went for a stroll around my neck of the woods, San Giovanni in Laterano. There was a festa of sorts and a few 'farmer' stalls set up selling fresh produce. You often spy these farmer markets around Rome but I think - although they are nice and I am sure they sell the freshest fruit and vegetables - they charge a fortune! Tomatoes were 3 euro a kilo...it is cheaper for me to go to the supermarket then to buy direct from these 'farmers.' They had cheese for 15 euro a kilo...I am sure it was a delicious, home made conncoction but really...15 euro a kilo. I cannot wait to leave Rome and their posh farmers markets.

So here are some photos from my stroll out and about in San Giovanni.

I live by one of the major churches in Rome, so it is very touristy...and we all know where ever there are tourists there are gypsies.

I now live within the old city walls. This is Porta San Giovanni.

What high prices, still it is the capital. In the summer I paid 7 euro for a kilo of Sicilian pecorino and 6 euro for 8 kilos of tomatoes to make fresh sauce. This was at a market in Sicily, prov. Agrigento. Your cash certainly goes further there. Btw I thoroughly enjoy your blog.

Hi Diane,
Lucky you to be in Sicily. Do you live there? I love Sicily and hope to return there next summer. And you are right, Rome is the capital so we should expect higher prices, but they really need to draw the line sometime.

Glad you like the blog too :)
Thanks!

You live near where my aunty used to live. I went through those old city walls so many times in my cousins battered cinquecento while I was living in Rome.

Hello Leanne,
No I don't live in Sicily but we have a house there, my husband is Sicilian. We usually manage to get there about 3 times a year and hopefully it will be for our retirement.
